Volunteer for Carter Hospice

Can you read out loud to someone, do light housekeeping, play games, tell stories, make phone calls, and most importantly listen? Carter Healthcare & Hospice is currently seeking compassionate & energetic people who want to make a difference in someone's life.

Our patients are very dear to our hearts as well as their caregivers. Sometimes, these precious caregivers need little breaks, and request a trustworthy dependable volunteer. There are several flexible opportunities for volunteers to choose from.

Carter Healthcare and Hospice will provide all necessary training for volunteers who are accepted into the program. No medical experience or knowledge is required. To work directly with patients, volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and meet the hourly service requirements for their specific assignment. This is generally a 6 month commitment to complete 40 volunteer hours.

Volunteer Requirements:

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, and willing to commit to the service requirements of their specific assignment. Volunteer Services will interview a select number of applicants each month, based on open positions. Selections are made by matching the interests and availability of volunteers with the current scheduling needs and volunteer opportunities. Prior to acceptance, background checks will be performed on all applicants. Volunteers are required to complete training and receive certain immunizations, including an annual flu shot, TB test, and COVID 19 vaccination. All requirements are provided by Carter healthcare at no cost to the volunteer.

Volunteer Roles:

Patient Companion: This role is in the patient’s home or nursing facility. As a patient companion you will have the opportunity to read books aloud, help run errands, prepare light meals, share a special talent, crafts, walk to dog, play music, play board games, do puzzles, paint fingernails, write letters for the patient, and most importantly provide support and relief to the care giver. (These are suggestions not required) ** This role will require a reliable mode of transportation.

Administrative Support: Volunteers make weekly check in calls to patients each Thursday to ensure they have all the supplies they need to make it through the weekend. Volunteers will also help write birthday letters, holiday cards, and other cards that let the patients know we are here to support them.

Pet Therapy: Pet owners who volunteer for this type of service are people who enjoy sharing the unique talents and abilities of their dogs with others. Pets should be certified Therapy Dogs with proof of insurance. (Examples: HALO and TDI)

What to consider before applying to Volunteer:

  • Why am I volunteering? Everyone has their own reasons for volunteering. ...
  • What are my strengths and weaknesses? ...
  • How much time do I have? ...
  • Will this experience help me in the future? ...

Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization.
